Introduction
The graduate institute of Audiology and Speech Pathology was established in September 2001. The graduate institute offers a graduate program in audiology and speech pathology at the master level. Acknowledging the great demand of speech therapists (or speech-language pathologists) and audiologists in Taiwan, National Kaohsiung Normal University submitted to Ministry of Education a proposal to establish a graduate institute in communication disorders in 1999. The proposal was approved in 2001, and the institute was admitted to have its first class with ten graduate students, five in audiology division and five in speech therapy division. In order to train more numbers of professionals in this area to serve the majority people in the southern Taiwan, we try to increase the number of graduate students year by year. Since 2002, the student number has increased to seven for speech therapy to make a total of 12 students each year. Since 2007, the graduate school admitted 15 students each year, ten students in speech therapy and five in the audiology. We hope to recruit more specialists in the communicative disorder area in the future. In 2007, the graduate school began to launch the Clinical Center of Speech and Hearing on campus as a community outreach program as well as a practicum resource center for graduate students. The Clinical Center of Speech and Hearing mainly provides many kinds of clinical services, including audiometry, hearing rehabilitation and speech therapy or speech training for children or adults with communicative disorders.
